Nature and History near Bovec
The Great Soča Gorge, around 11 kilometres from Bovec, is one of the best-known natural sights on the upper Soča River. Virje Waterfall near Plužna is another recognised local attraction, although access and conditions should be checked for the date of a visit.
Bovec’s position between mountain passes and narrow Alpine valleys has long given the area strategic importance. Kluže Fortress stands above the Koritnica gorge near Bovec and reflects several periods of defence and conflict. The wider region was also deeply affected by the Soča or Isonzo Front during the First World War, and surviving sites around Bovec preserve part of that history.
